What is gif?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a raster-graphics file format that supports lossless compression and is well-known for its animation capabilities. Developed by CompuServe, GIF is limited to a palette of 256 colours, making it suitable for simple graphics and images with limited colour ranges. GIF supports transparency through a single colour but does not support alpha channels. It is commonly used for web graphics, logos, and short animations.
